“Attie, you’ll make a fat man of me, yet.” Grandpa drawled, rubbing his belly and stretching back in his chair.

“I think that’s impossible Grandpa,” I said, taking my dishes to the sink, and crossing back for the pasta bowl.

Dad, quiet as ever, stared at the wall, as he shoveled another bite of shrimp angel hair pasta into his mouth.

I kissed the side of his forehead. “How is it, Daddy?”

He looked at me as though he just realized I was there, an absent expression on his face

Ch 4. Vision RevealedI swallowed the two large pills grumpily, gulping down enough water to squeeze their chalky awkward bulk down my throat and plunked the glass on top of the breakfast dishes in the sink. Outside the kitchen window, the sky almost matched the wet asphalt of our driveway. Each drop that slanted against the window seemed to hammer into my brain.

I’d already called Grandpa to ask him to call the high school to excuse me today. He asked me to get another appointment with my neurologist at Emory. I promised I would.

Now I dialed Dr. Amstrong’s office.

“Woodstock Family Psychiatry.”

“This is Attie Haywood. I won’

Prologue - Nightmare MigrainesPain sliced through my skull like a blade of fire.  I clenched my teeth on the fleshy base of my thumb, doubling over, clawing at the sheets.  I squeezed my eyes against what I knew was coming next.

What always came next.

Even with eyes clamped, I clearly saw the room around me: the pale lavendar walls, the white trim and furniture.   Though my eyes were shut, my consciousness focused on my homemade striped curtains framing the woods in our backyard.

The Mysterious Gabe Michaels"Attie, over here," Jade's voice rang through the crisp autumn air. I carried my lunch across the courtyard, breathing deeply and savoring the sweet chill in the air but the warm kiss of sunshine on my cheeks.

The medication was working its magic. I relished a new sense of serenity as my feet crunched acorns and pine straw into the grass and I entered the grove of trees, painted with autumn's best. A light breeze swirled a few leaves in the air before me, which I ducked as I sat at the table across from Jade and sighed happily.

"You're unusually chipper," she teased. "What's your secret?"

I smiled and shrugged, taking a bite of my sand

Sam The Tow-Man"No, no, no!" I groaned to myself, trying to get the engine to start again.  Nothing.

"Are you kidding me?  Augh!"  I slammed my palm against the steering wheel, and slumped in frustration.

My '69 GTO had only been running for eleven days, and that alone was frustrating enough.  But why, why, why did it have to die in front of Dr. Armstrong's office?  It was after our third session, and even though somewhere in the back of my mind I knew that eventually the truth would come out, I hoped to keep my secret for as long as humanly possible.  My plan included pay

Okay, so with Sam there could never be a good reason for me spending any time with Gabe, but this would have to do: The Tri-County Martial Arts Tournament.
